This April, a group of women are heading to Ghana to serve our partners, City of Refuge. 90 boys and girls call this village home after being rescued from the evil of human trafficking. Ghana is home to the largest man-made lake in the world. Here in Lake Volta it is estimated that more than 7,000 children are used as slave labor, working as fishermen. Most of them are malnourished and neglected and none are able to attend school.  Some of these children are as young as 3 years old. Thankfully, organizations like City of Refuge exist to offer the children who are rescued a better life.

At City of Refuge, children are provided for, mind, body, and soul. They have access to  a proper bed, nutrition, medical care, and schooling. They have medical care on site as well as the ability to learn English and grow in their relationship with Christ. As a way of fighting human trafficking before it starts, City of Refuge also offers a micro-finance discipleship program for single moms in the area. Women are taught to read and write in English as well as how to sew clothing. After a few years, they are prepared to go back to their own villages and teach others.

Our team will have the privilege of living on-site with the staff and children of City of Refuge. Each team is asked to help in a variety of ways, based on their cumulative strengths. Some have worked the gardens, others helped at the school, and some have participated in worship events. Teams have helped organize closets, conduct health assessments, and serve as encouragement to the staff. We go in humility knowing we have much to learn and with a willing heart to serve however we are needed.
